  • Whaaaa? Tommy Tuberville done at Auburn, Charlie Weis Stays at Notre Dame

December 4th, 2008 | By Jack Newhouse Posted in NCAA FB

Coach Tommy Tuberville is done after ten years as coach of the Auburn Tigers football team.

Tuberville leaves Auburn as the 4th most winning coach in school history. He amassed a 85-40 record. The crown jewel of Tuberville’s time at Auburn, 2004, when he achieved a 13-0 season where the Tigers won the SEC and finished ranked #2 in the nation.

As we know, school Athletic Directors can be very short term focused. Auburn finished 5-7 in the very challenging SEC conference.

What makes this surprising? Next season, Charlie Weis will still be the coach at Notre Dame. Returning for his fifth season, Weis is coming of a 9-15 record over the past two seasons.

Weis started of hot at Notre Dame, but many attributed his success to the recruting efforts of previous Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham. Now that Weis is coaching his players, Notre Dame is playing horribly.

If current Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick knew coach Tommy Tuberville was available, would Charlie Weis still have a job?

  • Brock Lesnar Training Montage vs. Rocky Balboa IV Montage

December 3rd, 2008 | By InGameNow Posted in MMA, wwe

    Two heavyweight legends.

    Two epic training montages.

And the only part that gets me more excited about Rocky is that it’s in Russia, in the freezing cold, and he is doing this in snow boots (highly underrated training tip).

Odds for a Rocky vs. Brock fight:
    - boxing: Rocky -250; Brock +425
    - MMA: Brock -450; Rocky +600
    - WW: Rocky -110; Brock -110

  • The Beat Down in T-Town Recap

December 3rd, 2008 | By David Chu Posted in Uncategorized

After a few days to settle down after the 36-0 “Beat Down in T-Town”, I have a brief lull period to give you guys some insight into the atmosphere, before I make the trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.  First off the day was a very ugly, muggy, foggy day.  The ground was wet but not muddy, as we walked through the quad, and stopped to get a bite to eat.  By the way, for anyone that will make a trip to Tuscaloosa if and when Alabama schedules a big time opponent there, Willy T’s Chicken Fingers and Fat Boy’s BBQ, simply awesome.  You Penn State fans, use this when you guys come to Tuscaloosa in a few years.

Anyway, I went with my family to my third (their second) Iron Bowl.  Along the way you can’t help but stop by Denny Chimes to hear the percussion section of Alabama’s Million Dollar Band.  That section more than any (no disrespect to those of you that have or are playing in others) makes you feel that it is gameday.  As we moved forward, through massive hoards of people, stopping to watch the #1 Alabama team ride down University Boulevard in buses towards Bryant-Denny Stadium.  We finally made our way to our seats up near the top but at the 50 yard line.  Then you sit and just take a look at the surroundings, which the fog was terrible around the stadium, and take in the atmosphere.

The Auburn band makes their way in and gets booed.  A few minutes later the Million Dollar Band makes their way in to a empty stadium due to massive traffic jams, and plays “Yea Alabama”.  First out the Auburn kickers, then the Alabama kickers, then the Auburn players and then the Alabama players; then Alabama exits back to the locker room, meanwhile the Auburn team mocked the student section by twirling their hands in the air mocking “Roll Tide”.  That would be the only time Auburn would feel superior to Alabama.

Pre-game festivities began, first the Million Dollar Band pumped the crowd up with the help of the cheerleaders.  Then they form a “U” and “A”, we honored a military great from Alabama, then country singer star (and wife of the last national championship quarterback Jay Barker) Sara Evans sang the national anthem, and did an amazing job. Then the band split to their formation so that Alabama can run out, but this time the seniors were honored.  One by one, the thirteen seniors were greeted by their parents and Coach Saban at midfield.  Then they run back in the tunnel to go through the traditional entrance into the stadium.  The coin toss then was held and Siran Stacy was announced as honorary captain.

For those that don’t know, Siran Stacy was a former running back for Alabama during the early 1990s, under Gene Stallings.  Last November he was driving with his wife and five other children.  His vehicle was rammed into by a drunk driver.  As a result he lost four of his five children and his wife, only his daughter survived, who was three at the time.  He came out of a coma about a month later.  He came out and was given a commemorative ball (as all other honorary captains do) and in a suit he walked to the 20 yard line, and started out of no where jumping up and down going crazy.  As if he was getting ready to play, and proceeded to throw his ball into the stands.  First off I was amazed at the character of this guy; second as I looked at the ball, if I was Saban I would look for him to be quarterback.  It was a great throw.  But besides that it was a heartwarming moment for a man who had been through a very difficult ordeal.

Then kickoff ensued, and as usual the crowd was nuts, but the game was kinda blah for the first half.  The crowd was excited with Glen Coffee’s 41-yard TD, and went nuts with the blocked field goal to end the half.  Then the second half started much like the first, the crowd went crazy for each touchdown, but as the second half winded down the crowd grew the anticipation for the end of the six-game losing streak.  Auburn fans had been filing out of the stadium since the end of the third quarter, and left en masse by the later stages of the 4th quarter.  Then the clock hit 0:00, and the following cheer (which is said after each win) was chanted the loudest I had ever heard it in my six years of going to Alabama games.  Here it is:

Hey (insert team name here, in this case Tigers), Hey Tigers
We just beat the hell outta you
    Rammer Jammer, Yellow-hammer
    Givem hell Alabama

(This picture was taken around the end of the 4th quarter)

That was chanted six times, about five times more than usual.  The team ran on the field celebrating with the students.  A player took one of the Alabama flags and planted it on the field.  Saban after his talk with CBS ran across the field saluting the fans, as the fans went crazy.  It took a while for the crowd to leave, as we left the stadium and made our way out, the crowd got louder, and apparently the seniors came out one final time to give a goodbye salute to Bryant-Denny Stadium.

People will be stalking stores Wednesday for Iron Bowl victory shirts, but Alabama fans also realize that there is a big prize awaiting to be had this Saturday.  For Alabama fans, this season is kind of like going to a restaurant on your birthday but not realizing it.  It was a great meal (12 victories), but out comes the cake and celebration.  You are surprised and happy with the free cake (SEC championship).  Alabama fans biggest surprise this year could be leaving Atlanta as a 22-time SEC Champion.  Remember also, after the dinner there are presents awaiting at the house, could a crystal ball be in the box for Alabama?  Stay tuned.

  • Gator Bowl: Clemson vs. Nebraska

December 3rd, 2008 | By Dan Winter Posted in InGameNow, NCAA FB

It is being reported that later today, the representatives of the Gator Bowl will announce that the Clemson Tigers are playing the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the January 1st bowl.

The Tigers finished up their 2008 regular season 7-5, with a 4-4 conference record. They won the last 3 games of the year by an average of 17 points. Senior quarterback Cullen Harper leads the team with 2,395 yards, 11 TDs and a 63.2% completion percentage. When the Tigers get down to the goalline, the ball is put in the hands of Senior James Davis and fellow runningback C.J. Spiller, who have combined for 18 TDs. Clemson is looking to take the momentum from late in the season for one last run with Harper and Davis.

Standing in Clemson’s way is a Nebraska Cornhusker team that is starting to regain their strength of old, with an 8-4 season, including a 5-3 record in the tough Big 12 Conference. However, these are not your father’s Cornhusker’s, or even the Cornhuskers from 5 years ago! Senior Joe Ganz leads a high-flying offense with 3,332 yards, 23 TDs, and 69.3% completions. Gone are the days of the Wishbone, but Roy Helu rounds out the offense gaining 6.7 yards a carry.

This should be a great game, so come with your analysis and talk it over with other fans at InGameNow.
