The Dow Hits 9999.99

4 Feb

The Dow Jones Industrial Average landed on an elegant 9999.99 before closing at 10,002.18 for the day. All 9’s isn’t a prime or a magic number or anything. We’d call it lucky but the DJIA was down 2.6% on the day. It’s lucky the trend stopped. Today was the first day below 10k since November 6 last year.

Great Time to Check Your Email

2 Feb

Rule #1 for reading your NSFW email forwards at work: make sure a live tv camera is not looking over your shoulder. Evidently this cubicle jockey at Macquarie Bank in Australia forgot about the evening news report happening just behind him as he proceeded to check out a few models in his inbox. As you can see, they were not economic models:

By the way if the women aren’t clear enough for you, you can look over his shoulder in hi def, albeit smaller.

Brett Favre’s Fail Seen by Biggest Audience Since Seinfeld Finale

26 Jan

Saints fans, Brett Favre haters, and Fox advertisers can all raise a glass to this past weekend’s ratings. Some 60M viewers tuned in to watch the epic battle between the Saints and the Vikings on Sunday, according to Variety. It was the biggest non-Superbowl audience in television since 1998:

The Fox football broadcast drew 57.9 million viewers, which makes it the most-watched program on all of television since “Seinfeld’s” exit attracted an audience of 76.3 million viewers.

It was also the biggest conference title game since 1982, when over 68M viewers saw The Catch. Unfortunately, what may possibly be the last play of Brett Favre’s career could be called The Catch for Saints fans:

Then again, who is to say he’ll actually retire? This would only be his 3rd year of fence-sitting.

High School Pranksters Re-enact Half Court Shot; Teacher Makes It

25 Jan

For those of you not familiar with Prank Wars, students at this high school were attempting to recreate this infamous installment, where the unsuspecting shooter was led to believe he won $500k by hitting a blind basketball shot.

What’s the best way to beat such a prank? Make the shot! That’s exactly what happened with this high school teacher who was about to “win” tickets to the Final Four. The only problem they didn’t account for was the odds he would actually hit it:

Next time choose a geekier teacher. This guy deserves his tickets!

Edit:
The shooter was Olathe Northwest HS science teacher and girls basketball coach Joel Branstrom. He also hit the shot again (sans blindfold) while filming a segment for the news. As a consolation for lack of tickets, he won a gift card to Chipotle.

Tim Tebow to Appear in Superbowl Ad

16 Jan

Tim Tebow is about to make his first Superbowl appearance already–in an ad for Focus on the Family. Tim and his mother will be sharing a personal “family affirming” story, according to the Denver Post. FotF is not revealing what it is about.

While it probably won’t be as funny as the 30 second shows put on by the Shankopotamus Baby, it is intended to inspire families as it will be seen by some 100M viewers. The ad will air just before, and again during, the Superbowl on CBS and is estimated to cost in the neighborhood of $2.5-$2.8M.
