  • Nebraska Cornhusker Football Begins the Pelini-Era

Nebraska set up the beginning of Bo Pelini’s career as the head coach of the Cornhusker’s perfectly. Nebraska’s first 5 games are at the friendly confines of Lincoln Memorial Stadium, including all 4 of their non-conference games. Only one of these non-conference teams are of any threat to the Cornhuskers: Virginia Tech. And as we saw earlier today against East Carolina, the Hokies may not be as good as previously thought.

But I am not faulting Nebraska’s athletic department. After years of dominance under Tom Osborne, Nebraska has been looking for a consistent leader of their team. Frank Solich had his wins, but parted ways after a mediocre 2002 year, and key loses towards the end of 2003. Bill Callahan led mediocre teams that Cornhusker faithful would like to forget.

So, how did the Bo Pelini-era begin? With a win, as intended! Western Michigan was no match for Pelini’s Cornhuskers and fell behind 17-0 within the first few seconds of the 2nd quarter. By half-time Nebraska led 34-10 and coasted in for the victory at home. In a creative change to the historical Nebraska wishbone, Joe Ganz led the Cornhuskers with 315 yards passing, going 19/31 with 4 TDs and 1 interception.

The Huskers looked good, but I am waiting to praise them until they face Virginia Tech and Missouri in back-to-back weeks starting September 27th.
