Bears Hall of Famer George McAfee Dies

George McAfee, a pro football Hall of Famer who played for the Chicago Bears, died yesterday (March 4, 2009) at the age of 90. McAfee had over 5,000 all-purpose yards in his NFL career with the Bears in 1940-1 and 1945-50, a career that included 8 seasons, with a break for his service in the Navy in World War II.

At 6′ tall and a lanky 178 lbs frame, McAfee was considered small even by 1940s NFL standards. But his performance as an All-American at Duke made him the second overall pick of the 1940 NFL draft. He was known for his explosive speed and made a career of versatility on the field, which earned him the nickname “One-Play McAfee”. In one of his prolific seasons, he scored 12 TDs: 6 rushing, 3 receiving, 1 punt return, 1 field goal return, and 1 interception returned for TD in the 1941 season.

McAfee was also an All-American at Duke and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. In 3 seasons he led the Blue Devils to a 24-4-1 record. He led them to two Southern Conference titles, and led the team in rushing, receiving, scoring, punt returns, interceptions, kickoff returns, and punting during his senior year. His passing was confirmed today by his church in Durham, NC.

NFL First Round Mock Draft Picks #13-22

#13 – Washington RedskinsEverette Brown, DE, Florida State

The Redskins will likely be looking to improve their offensive line in this draft, but I think they’ll take a close look at some defensive ends that will be available in the middle of the first round. The Jason Taylor acquisition failed to have a big impact, and Washington ranked 28th in the NFL in sacks this year. While Texas’ Brian Orakpo and Georgia Tech’s Michael Johnson are better athletes and physical specimens, Everette Brown might simply be the better football player. Vernon Ghostlon had great numbers at the Combine last year, but couldn’t earn a spot on defense this season after the Jets drafted him 6th. As a result, teams might weigh game performance more heavily this year, and Everette Brown had 21.5 tackles for a loss and 13.5 sacks for Florida State.

This year’s Super Bowl has come to a close, and it’s now time to look ahead to next year, where every team has a shot at being world champs. The New England Patriots are currently at #1, but if Brady does not return, that ranking could change. The defending champs (Pittsburgh Steelers) are [...]

Dan Reeves to Coach with 49ers?

Yesterday, Dan Reeves completed his interview with the San Francisco 49ers to be Mike Singletary’s offensive coordinator. Reeves would be the ideal choice for an organization with an inexperienced head coach. Reeves led the Denver Broncos to 3 Super Bowls and the Atlanta Falcons to 1 during his coaching career. Unfortunately, none were victories, and Reeves was [...]
