What?? Notre Dame Could Return to the National Rankings?!? It’s True
October 11th, 2008 | By Sean Finerty Posted in NCAA FB
Ever since last year, Notre Dame football has been a mess. Or at least we thought so. There’s no question the 2007 season was horrific for those in South Bend. Heading into 2008, expectations weren’t much higher and many were already calling for head coach Charlie Weis’s head.
But, is it possible that things are turning around for the domers? They currently stand at 4-1, and while they haven’t been playing some of the powerhouses they’re historically used to playing, wins against Michigan, Purdue, and Stanford are not to be quickly dismissed. At least that’s what the voters for the AP and USA Today polls are thinking, as the Fighting Irish received 6 votes and 11 votes respectively.
Today, Notre Dame plays their first nationally ranked opponent of the year in No. 22 North Carolina. Notre Dame holds the all-time series advantage at 16-1, and if they’re able to push that record to 17-1, don’t be surprised if you see the Fighting Irish crack the Top 25.

September 28th, 2008 | By InGameNow Posted in NCAA FB
Yesterday was a debacle for top 25 teams - and it’s even more surprising considering that *everyone* should have been:
1. revved up after USC’s loss; after all, #1 was wide open!
2. aware of the upset. You saw Oregon State dismantle them on national TV, right?!Well seven top 25 teams lost and there were some dominating performances like Alabama and Oregon State. Today’s top 10 will look almost entirely different in positions and we will analyze when published. Here are yesterday’s upsets according to our venerable friends at TheBigLead:

Michigan Wolverines Try to Avoid Another Opening Day Loss
August 30th, 2008 | By InGameNow Posted in InGameNow, NCAA FB
The Michigan Wolverines are trying to put 2007 as far behind them as possible, as quickly as possible. They were off to a good start in 2008, when they closed the first quarter with a lead of 10-6. But it was all Utah Utes from there, as quarterback Brian Johnson and company scored 16 unanswered points to take the 22-10 lead going into halftime.
Some of the interesting stats from the first half:
UTAH
Brian Johnson: 15/23, 253 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
MICHIGAN
Nick Sheridan: 11/19, 98 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Michigan Rushing: 10 attempts, 4 yards

Chris Beanie Wells Injured; Ohio State Football and Fans Agonize
August 30th, 2008 | By InGameNow Posted in NCAA FB
Uh oh.
Chris Beanie Wells had a phenomenal start to the 2008 NCAA Football season for Ohio State… and then everything fell apart. He had 13 carries for 111 yards before injuring his foot and being taken out of the game. X-Rays were negative but this is very bad for Ohio State Football and for Beanie’s Heisman hopes. A foot injury can be quite complicated and is particularly tough for guys relying on speed and cutting.
Meanwhile, fans at Michigan cracked a bottle of whiskey open in celebration.

Michigan Football - Best Moments in the Past 20 Years
August 29th, 2008 | By Josh Posted in NCAA FB
Saturday starts what might be a tough season for us Wolverine fans - wanted to take a few minutes and relive some of the amazing times we have had over the past 20 years… If you have other highlights you think should have made this list, post them here.
1991 - Desmond Howard’s Catch (vs. Notre Dame) With Michigan trying to avoid a fourth-straight loss to Notre Dame, the Wolverines faced a 4th-and-1 in Fighting Irish territory late in the game. Elvis Grbac found a laid-out Howard in the back of the end zone for the winning score - flat out one of the most amazing grabs ever. Not to mention, Michigan calling a pass on 4th and 1 - are you kidding me:
1991 - Desmond Howard Heisman Pose (vs. Ohio State) Howard returned a Buckeye punt 93 yards for a touchdown, prompting Keith Jackson to proclaim “Hello Heisman!” when he crossed the goal line. Obviously unaware of Jackson’s well-timed comments, Howard simultaneously struck the pose of the historic trophy, marking one of the most memorable moments in the history of college football:
1994- Remy Hamilton’s Game Winning FG (vs. Notre Dame) Down 24-23 with less than a minute remaining in South Bend, Todd Collins drove Michigan the length of the field setting Remy Hamilton up for a last second 42-yard Field Goal… watch the last minute of the game for yourself:
1995- 17-point 4th Quarter Comeback (vs. Virginia) Scott Dreisbach is not a name that regularly stands-out among the great Michigan QBs of the past 20 years, but in the 1995 season-opening Pigskin Classic against Virginia, he spearheaded a 18-point fourth quarter comeback, capped by a last-second touchdown pass to WR Mercury Hayes:
1995- Tim Biakabutuka: 313 yard game (vs. Ohio State) In what was expected to be the cap to a Heisman Trophy season from Eddie George, Touchdown Tim showed him up by going off for over 300 yards leading Michigan to a victory over the previously-undefeated Buckeyes:
1997- Charles Woodson, Best Interception Ever (vs. Mich State) While this game eventually became a blowout, no play better showcases the complete dominance of the Michigan Defense and Charles Woodson in 1997 than his one handed, leaping interception of a ball MSU QB Todd Schultz is clearly trying to throw into the stands:
1997- Michigan 20 - Ohio State 14 This was THE game that made the dream of a National Championship a reailty and sealed the Heisman Trophy for Charles Woodson - Woodson won his head-to-head battle with the vocal David Boston, had a an Interception in the End Zone, a Punt Return for a TD, and a key 37-yard catch on the drive resulting in Michigan’s only offensive TD of the game… the highlights are amazing:
2004- Braylon Edwards 3TDs in 17 Point Comeback (vs. Michigan State) Braylon Edwards made unbelievable plays on two touchdown passes to help Michigan erase a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit in just 5:44 and grabbed a third TD in triple overtime to lift the Wolverines to a 45-37 win over Michigan State.

Michael Phelps: Best Athlete Ever? A Wolverine?
August 13th, 2008 | By Josh Posted in Olympics
Ok, I am not really a swimming guy myself - I watch it for a few minutes every four years. I would much rather watch football, basketball, hockey, even baseball, but… WOW, even I have to admit, Michael Phelps is now unquestionably from my perspective near the very top of the Best Athlete Ever list - the Jordan, Gretzky, Tiger list. Yes, that good. Maybe even better than any of them. Argue if you want to, but he is making the case for me every day right now.
But… Michigan fans are now jumping on the bandwagon, coming out of the woodwork, (insert additional cliche here) to claim him as a Wolverine. Is he?
The case for: He attend classes at Michigan, lived in Ann Arbor, was a volunteer assistant for the varsity swim team, competed for Club Wolverine, a club team associated with the University, and wore the maize-and-blue.
The case against: He never was a varsity swimmer for Michigan (not an amateur, makes $5MM/year), he only moved to Ann Arbor to be with his coach (who was the coach of the varsity swim team).
Do Michigan fans have a right to claim Michael Phelps?
